A contextual backlink is a link that sits inside the body text of a page — in the middle of an article, surrounded by sentences — rather than in a profile field, a comment box, or a sidebar. A GSA SER contextual link list is target data for platforms where the software can create that kind of placement automatically. Both halves of that definition matter, because most of what GSA SER can post is not contextual, and most of what is sold as a contextual link list stops being accurate soon after it is exported.

The distinction is placement, not platform prestige. A contextual link on a modest article site is still contextual; a link in the author-bio box of a famous blog still is not. Run projects against article-capable engine types — article platforms, web 2.0s, wikis — with targets that have actually verified on those engines. The bottleneck is target supply: contextual-capable sites are scarcer and decay faster than comment or profile targets, so the practical question is where your targets come from and how recently they were re-verified.
You can scrape and verify your own (slow and resource-heavy, but yours), use circulating free lists (stale on arrival for this platform class), or subscribe to a maintained feed that re-verifies continuously. Whatever the source, ask two questions: which engine types does the data actually cover, and when was each target last re-verified?
If “buy” means hand-placed editorial links, that is a different product at a different price per link, and outside GSA SER’s world. Within automation, the choice is between building your own target pipeline and subscribing to maintained target data — the links themselves are always built by your own GSA SER, your content and your settings.
